Below we will explain the entire process and also basics you need to consider. After we are done, you will be ready to play any game you want on any PC you own.
2 things you will need
In order to play NES games on your PC, you will need to download two things. They are available at Gamulator and they are small in size so you can download them even if you have a slow internet connection. Don’t think of them as some complicated piece of software that will require a massive guide to understand. The 2 things you need are:
1 – Emulator
Emulator is software that mimics the operating system of NES. Basically, it allows for the games to operate on a modern computer running Windows or Mac operating system. If you try to play the game without an emulator, you will see that your PC doesn’t recognize the file. This is because NES games were developed for a specific platform. The emulator will be used to open those files.
A great advantage here is the fact you can mimic the user interface and all the options using an emulator. All you have to do is to download it and install it
2 – ROM
ROM is a copy of the game which was available on cartridge. Nowadays they are available in ROM files and they are actual games with all missions, characters and other elements a game had. This file can’t be opened without an emulator. Of course, you will need to download a ROM file of the game you want to play. Be free to download multiple files.
How to load and run the game
For the small guide we have here, we selected Snes9X emulator. The process is actually the same regardless of which emulator you choose so you need to follow the same steps. Before moving, install your emulator if you haven’t already.
- Open Snes9X
- Go to menu File and click open
- Locate the ROM file
- Load the game
As you can see the entire process is super easy and you can complete it in a matter of seconds. The same steps are used regardless of which operating system you use. Yes, they are the same even if you use a Mac operating system.
Once you have opened the game, the menu, similar to the actual NES console will appear. You can play the game, control it and etc. within the menu. Once done, close the emulator and repeat the steps to play another game.
