What are the Major Symptoms of Video Gaming Addiction?

As a gamer and having friends who play all types of video games on a regular basis, the topic of video game addiction intrigues me a lot. In this article, I will share my views on the subject as a gamer, relate my experiences, and help share information I find with others who are also interested, and mainly I will talk about the gaming addiction symptoms. Video game addiction is something I would have scoffed at a few years ago, but as I learned more about the subject, I realized firsthand and through other resources just how damaging it can be.

Gaming Addiction Symptoms

As of the time of this posting, no one is professionally diagnosing anyone with an addiction to video gaming. It is, of course, being suggested that the symptoms of gaming addiction are very much like the symptoms of other addictions, for example, alcoholism. With that said, there is currently no list of requirements that one would have to meet to be considered addicted to video games, but it seems like, based on what many are saying, we are not far from this happening.

Recognizing that you are spending too much time playing video games is as much of a first step as recognizing any other addictive behavior. In fact, more than being the first step, it is a BIG step in itself. Here, recognizing means that you are aware that there is a problem and it must be resolved. Luckily, there are a few solutions to the issue of gaming addiction.

The subject of video game addiction is a relatively new one, and it is being recognized as an issue by more clinics and doctors every year. There are already many ways in which you can face the issue of this addiction and work toward getting out from under it.

  • Having a sense of happiness while you are at the computer playing
  • Powerlessness to even take a break from gaming activity
  • Craving to spend more and more time playing games
  • Negligence regarding family and friends and other social activities
  • Feeling empty, depressed, ill-tempered when you are not playing
  • Facing the issue of low performance at studies and other jobs
  • Headaches and back pain
  • Skipping meals or eating at irregular times, mostly while playing games
  • Ignoring the routine of hygiene
  • Irregular sleep patterns

These are just some of the symptoms of a video game addiction. If you know someone who has these kinds of symptoms and is spending a huge amount of time playing, it is highly likely that they have developed the addiction.

A large focus of determining the cause of video game addiction is on the built-in reward system of games, which are a huge part of MMOs and MMOs are intended to keep people playing, especially in games of which you need to maintain a monthly subscription to continue playing. Thus, this is much like a carrot on a stick. To get rid of this addiction, you need to realize you are being led and take action to stop pursuing this carrot.
